About Calgary Quadrants
Calgarians tend to think of Calgary as divided into four separate quadrants—the northeast, northwest, southeast and southwest. While any other city can be cut into a pie like this, you need to get familiar with these names if you’re planning a move to Calgary. These divisions are commonly referred to by both residents and the media.
Calgary’s quadrants are also reflected by the street addresses. Each street ends with NW, NE, SW or SE for the quadrant. Most of the Avenues run east-west, and the Streets run north-south. Roads that change direction have different appellations, like Road or Trail.

Here’s a brief overview of these four different sections, each with its own personality and distinction.
Northeast Calgary
The northeast quadrant is divided from the rest of Calgary by Deerfoot Trail, a major freeway that carries much of the city’s commuter traffic and becomes heavily congested during rush hour. This area features a significant amount of industrial space alongside established, older neighborhoods. It’s also close to popular attractions such as the Prehistoric Park, the Botanical Garden, and the Calgary Zoo. With relatively affordable housing and convenient access to other parts of the city, the northeast is an excellent option—especially for frequent travelers or those working near the airport.
Northwest Calgary
This part of the city is home to many of Calgary’s major athletic venues and educational institutions, including McMahon Stadium, Canada Olympic Park, and the University of Calgary. The northwest quadrant is known for its upscale residential communities and also features Kensington Village, a popular and vibrant area. Nose Hill Park sits at the heart of the northwest, providing residents with easy access to scenic walking and hiking trails. With its proximity to major routes leading west, this is an ideal place to live for anyone who enjoys weekend trips to the mountains.

In 2016, the Calgary Real Estate Board further subdivided the quadrants into eight districts: City Centre, North, Northeast, East, Southeast, South, West, and Northwest. (There is no Southwest district.)
City Centre Calgary

Southeast Calgary

Quite a few of Calgary’s lake communities are located in Southeast Calgary.
South Calgary

West Calgary

Northwest Calgary
