Calgarians think of the city as divided into four separate quadrants — northeast, northwest, southeast and southwest. If you're planning a move to Calgary, these names are worth knowing; they're used constantly by both residents and local media.
Calgary's quadrants are also reflected in its street addresses — every street ends with NW, NE, SW or SE. Most Avenues run east–west and Streets run north–south, while roads that change direction take names like Road or Trail.
Divided from the rest of the city by Deerfoot Trail, the northeast blends industrial space with established older neighbourhoods. It's close to the Calgary Zoo, Prehistoric Park and Botanical Garden, with relatively affordable housing and easy airport access — ideal for frequent travellers.
Home to McMahon Stadium, Canada Olympic Park and the University of Calgary, the NW is known for upscale communities and the vibrant Kensington Village. Nose Hill Park sits at its heart, and quick access to westbound routes makes it perfect for weekend trips to the mountains.
The SE holds the city's largest industrial hub alongside rapid residential growth and some of Calgary's finest parks. Notable attractions include the Stampede Grounds, the Saddledome and the Spruce Meadows equestrian venue.
A blend of commercial districts and upscale residential communities with downtown access that never requires crossing a bridge. Highlights include the North Glenmore Reservoir, the 17th Avenue shopping corridor and the 4th Street restaurant district.
In 2016, the Calgary Real Estate Board further subdivided the quadrants into eight districts: City Centre, North, Northeast, East, Southeast, South, West and Northwest. (There is no Southwest district.)
